Q1: Sarah asks you if she can see her baby again. You kindly arranged a video call an hour ago as Baby Theo is still in another hospital.
A: I would try and arrange for a daily video call with the other hospital whilst also explaining sensitively to Sarah that Theo is in safe hands and being constantly monitored. I would also make her aware that this may not always be possible due to emergencies that may arise on the wards but that we will always try our best to make it happen.

Q2: Sarah is still on the ward away from her new-born baby. As you walk past you can see that the curtains are around the bed space are closed and you can hear crying. No other staff are around.
A: I would ask her if she is okay and offer support around the reason why she is upset. I would listen to her concerns and put a plan of action in place for how her concerns can be better managed. Maybe there are other mums on the ward who are going through the same thing that she could confide in or are there support groups that would be able to help?

Q3: Sarah calls you over and informs you that she is going to self discharge and go to see her baby at the local hospital.
A: It would not be in Sarah’s best interests to self-discharge and it is imperative for her to understand that the best thing for Theo, as his mother, is to recuperate and restore her own health. I think it is a good idea to explore the possibility of facilitating more contact with Baby Theo if this is possible.
