Collaborative Questions to Discuss for Eve Edwards
Q1: What services would you consider referring to for Eve to remain at home?
1. Dementia Nursing Team, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and consider carers.
2. None the family have got this under control.
3. Mental Health Services, local council, and GP.
Q2: Eve has Alzheimer’s disease, and her son and daughter are both inputting into her care. Who should be making the decisions about Eve’s care?
1. Eve.
2. Her son.
3. Her daughter, the person who lives closest.
Q3: It is ok to adapt the home to ensure that Eve does not do things that may put her at risk. Stopping her going into the kitchen area by using black mats next to the door is an effective way to manage falls.
1. Yes, this is a good strategy as it keeps Eve away from risks.
2. No, this is not good. It is not supportive and is going to cause further complications within Eve’s house and life.
3. It is up to Eve’s daughter how she looks after her mother.
Q4: What did you understand from the answerphone messages left on Eve’s telephone? How did these messages sound to you? How do you feel about putting yourself in Eve’s shoes and hearing the answerphone messages as if you were her?
Q1 – I would choose option 1 because…….although Eve’s daughter visits it is not enough to cover Eve’s needs. A Physiotherapist could help Eve regain her physical strength after having fall and an OT can assess her ability to function in her house. It is of concern that Eve lives in a two-storey house and the bathroom is upstairs.
Q2- I would choose option 1, Eve has an insight into her condition and can answer questions regarding her needs. Although her children have no power of attorney, they can be involved if they are her next of keen
Q3- I would choose option 2, although the black mats are a solution, Eve should be supported to live in her household rather than be prevented to access parts of her house. Her kitchen could be adapted to become more user-friendly or a second toilet could be built on the ground floor for her to make it accessible when she needs to use it.
Q4 I only managed to pick up words such as claims (sounded like an advert), Amazing department, coming in on Friday between 1-3, security call. What I heard was not enough to understand what the messages were about and if they were of relevance to me or whether they might have been cold/sales calls.
I can imagine these messages would only cause confusion to Eve and maybe worry.Q1- I would pick option 1, as Eve needs more support at home and this can be in form of multidisciplinary team. Her daughter is unable to support her efficiently.
Q2- i would choose option 1 as Eve still has capacity and she is able to choose what care she would like to have, also as her Son is far away and it seems as if her daughter is unaware of her needs.
Q3- I would choose option 2, as i believe her house can be adapted more and the black mats can be used to prevent her from leaving the house but not from moving around and getting herself food and drink. Its better than her escaping to the roads and getting lost.
Q1 ,I will choose Option 1 because Eve would need the physio, OT and cares,s input in order to support her to live independently.
Q2. I would choose option 3 -her daughter .this is because she lives close and would help Eve make informed decisions about her care.
Q3. Option one is preferable because the black mat is anti-slippery and would help Eve not to have a fall
Q4. The voice messages is quite helpful to be used as a means of communicating with Eve. She does well with it, serving as an alternative to face-to-face communication.Q1. I would choose option 1 as it’s very important to have a care plan constructed for eve as she is high risks to fall and isn’t safe staying by herself in the house. She’s had several falls so she would need a physiotherapist to assess her mobility so a care plan can be in place and also other multidisciplinary team working alongside to create a plan for her.
Q2. I would choose option 1 as eve knows her requirements and also in terms of her daughter she’s mostly busy and as eve mentioned she’s always in a rush and also her son can only speak to her through virtually rather than being there physically.
Q3. I would choose option 1 as it would help prevent eve from falling as people with Alzheimer think that anything with dark colour is a hole which could prevent it. However, other adjustments has to be made for this to take into consideration.
Q4: I couldn’t really hear it properly but it was really disturbing and irritating. I can imagine her being even confused and frustrated. In terms of environment it’s generally not a good mind space for her there will be a lot of implementation that would need to be adjusted for her as it’s really not safe for her.
