Q1 – I would choose option 1 and try to arrange another video call. Because Sarah is a new mother and is in distress, being far away from her baby. She also post-operation herself and should not worry much but concentrate on recovery. I think it will be most compassionate to organise the call as Sarah’s husband cannot see Theo, and the video call is the only thread with mother and baby.
Q2- I would choose option 2 as would not be able to ignore the patient crying or in distress. I would try to calm Sarah to the best of my ability, offer her a beverage and listen to her concerns. After giving birth women’s hormones are all over the place and with the situation Sarah is in it is paramount to look for the signs of post-natal depression. So as a nurse I can be the first port of call to spot this condition.
Q3- I would choose option 2 as Sarah is clearly not ready to be discharged.
I will explain that it will be in the best of her and her baby’s interest for her to heal properly so she then can care for Theo.
Also, have a discussion with the ward manager about when she can have videocalls to Theo or at what point she can travel to see him in the other hospital
