KeymasterWhat would you say to Tom after the news has been broken to him about his wife. Which of the below is the most appropriate response?
- I am so sad she was a lovely lady it has really upset me.
- This is such a shock for you would you like me to phone your daughter or stay with you while you phone her?
- Here are the information leaflets about what to do after someone dies.
- Let me get her clothes for you. Have you got a bag?

ParticipantResponse 2 I think is the most appropriate response because you are aware that Tom needs family support and understand that he might not be able to make that call himself. Response 1 is inappropriate because I didn’t know Mary and my feeling are irrelevant to Tom.
Response 3 would be something that would need to be given to Tom but only when he was ready to leave the hospital.
Response 4 is just rude and shows no empathy to Tom and insensitive.-

ParticipantI agree with Sarah, Response 2 allows Tom’s daughter to be informed and provide emotional support at potentially a better level than a stranger to him could. I would perhaps adjust the response though to include whether Tom wanted one of the medical staff to call his daughter to come to the hospital. Response 1 whilst kind, seems a little self-centered, Response 3 is necessary at some point but not straight away, and Response 4 is unsympathetic and rude.

ParticipantResponse 2, Tom will need his family around him to support him. Information could be given after his daughter had arrived.

ParticipantResponse 2, Tom is shocked to hear what happened and wants assistance from his family. Help him to phone his daughter and provide any other support if necessary.

Participantresponse 2- Tom is in a state of shock and will need as much support offered to him as possible. Ensuring that Tom will have a relative with him will ensure that Tom is provided with emotional support from a loved one at such a distressing time. He will also be able to confide in someone who understands what he is going through.

ParticipantResponse number 2 as this would allow for him to have support from a family member after receiving such shocking news.

2.This is such a shock for you would you like me to phone your daughter or stay with you while you phone her?
Because Tom needs the support of other family members and he would probably really appreciate that we have offered to stay with him, because as humans we need that interaction and support from others when we are going through the toughest times of our lives.

ParticipantWhat would you say to Tom after the news has been broken to him about his wife? Which of the below is the most appropriate response?
I think the most appropriate response will be: This is such a shock for you would you like me to phone your daughter or stay with you while you phone her?
It will be nice for Tom to know that the nurse is by him while he breaks the sad news to his daughter. She can always take over the phone call if Tom is too upset to talk.October 26, 2022 at 4:17 pm #9019Rebecca Conway
ParticipantI would choose response 2 as you are validating how he is feeling. no false information or comments are made and you’re showing compassion, and empathy whilst offering to stay whilst he rings his daughter knowing it will be a difficult conversation to have.

ParticipantI wold choose response #2. This is because response #1 seems unprofessional and too personal, and responses #3 & #4. are quite heartless.
The nurse is offering professional support, Tom might not realise it right now, but this support could be essential. The daughter ill be grateful for the nurse looking after her dad too.October 27, 2022 at 4:36 pm #9034Ngozi Iraegbulam
Participant2) This is such a shock for you would you like me to phone your daughter or stay with you while you phone her?

ParticipantAnswer 2 is empathic and shows him that you care. It is important to offer help and meaningful for him to have someone with him while dealing with all these emotions.

ParticipantOption 2 – This is such a shock for you would you like me to phone your daughter or stay with you while you phone her?
As others have said, this shows empathy towards Tom and support in this tragic circumstance

ParticipantIn my opinion, response 2 is the most appropriate response as Tom is broken and he needs emotional support, and the best person would be his daughter. Tom would really appreciate that we have offered to stay with him.

ParticipantThe most appropriate response would be number 2 as Tom would need the emotional support from his family. A Staff member should be present to comfort him until his daughter arrives.
