1) Make a phone call to the other hospital to see if this is possible, as you know this is a difficult situation and must be hard for Sarah. – doing my best to reassure Sarah will help her feel less anxious of the unknown. Calling the hospital will provide up to date information on how baby Theo is and Sarah knowing for sure whether she can see her baby will help her cope better with the situation.

2) Ask Sarah if you can come into the bed space and offer to support her. Listen to her concerns and put a plan of action in place for how her concerns can be better managed. – This will give reassurance to Sarah that something is being done and there is support and people she can talk to and there are things that can be done to ease her worries.

3) Explain to Sarah that it would not be in her best interests to leave the hospital at the moment due to her current medication, post-operative condition and health. Agree to have a chat with her and the ward manager about how you can facilitate more contact with Baby Theo to ensure they are bonding as much as possible – Sarah needs to understand that leaving the hospital would put her health at risk and may deteriorate if she doesn’t stay and get the treatment required for her to get better. Delayed recovery may lead to prolonged period in hospital and thus make it even longer for her and baby Theo to unite.
