Q1 I would sort of do a combination of all three answers, if I was busy with another patient I would acknowledge the request so she is aware I’m not ignoring her needs and will speak with her at a more convenient time giving my full attention to the situation. I would possibly call the other hospital to see if they can arrange a set time of day for a video call daily to offer some structure and expectations for Sarah. I would reassure her that although the Nurses are busy looking after Theo they would inform Sarah of any important changes to his status.
Q2 I would ask Sarah if she would like me to come and offer support and after listening carefully to her concerns put a plan together with her to input and agreement, to enable us to manage them.
Q3 I would advise against leaving and explain the reasoning clearly and make sure she understands, getting the ward manager involved would be a good idea as they could also explain and offer advice and maybe a resolution to the problem. They could liaise with the other hospital and plan a way forward to manage the situation to keep everyone safe and offer Sarah some options about how to bond with Theo more effectively. Could Sarah be moved closer to Theo? Could she have more regular video calls ? Are there other professionals available that can offer counselling and coping strategies for Sarah and her husband in this very difficult situation they find themselves in?
