Q1: Sarah asks you if she can see her baby again. You kindly arranged a video call an hour ago as Baby Theo is still in another hospital.
I will choose option 1, although I have never been in Sarah situation before, I can imagine how difficult this must be for her as a mother, it will be nice to put a call through to the other hospital if that will help calm Sarah down a long as is within the rules and regulations of the hospital, as this also will help her to stop crying , as crying can increase her anxiety as a result affect her health.
Q2 : Sarah is still on the ward away from her new-born baby. As you walk past you can see.
I will choose option 2, because, the curtain is close for a reason, at least to give Sarah her privacy, so I will introduce myself over the curtain and seek for her consent while I wait for Sarah’s approval before opening the curtain because, as no body was around it may be that Sarah may just want a time alone, if not, I will listen to her worries or complains and give advice if I can or pass her query to the appropriate person.
Q3 : Sarah calls you over and informs you that she is going to self discharge and go to see her baby at the local hospital.
I will choose option 3. Explain to Sarah that it would not be in her best interests to leave the hospital at the moment due to her current medication, post operative condition and health. Agree to have a chat with her and the ward manager about how you can facilitate more contact with Baby Theo to ensure they are bonding as much as possible. Because agreeing to give Sarah more access to see her son, will make her relax and put her mind at rest which will help her recovering. I will also explain to her that even if she discharge herself, she may not be allowed to see her son, but staying in the hospital will help her recovering and also give the son time to recover too.
