Q1- i would personally choose option 1. This is because Sarah is still in recovery so it is important to check that she is physically, emotionally and mentally stable prior to the phone call taking place. But it is also important to make sure that baby Theo is stable so that the experience will not be traumatic for Sarah. If baby Theo is too poorly for the phone call, i do not think this would be appropriate as it could be distressing for Sarah.

Q2- I would choose option 2, because it is important to show compassion towards Sarah and be open and prepared to listen to her concerns and put into place any plans moving forward. Sarah has been through major surgery and is suffering from separation anxiety from her son on top of his health condition. Sarah is most likely feeling anxious and depressed and could benefit from support when it is available. A friendly face and supportive words could do her the world of good.

Q3- I would choose option 2. This is because Sarah’s health is a priority and currently she is vulnerable and at risk of further complications. If she was to self discharge she would put herself at risk and potentially cause further delay in being able to see Theo and support him. It is important these risks are explained to her in a sensitive approach and she has a clear understanding of these risks.
