1, Focus on assessing patient first: I agree with what Hannah, Forlefac and Zara have said about priortising patients condition first, unless it was a complete emergency I would not contact the family first and even then I would ask the patient if he wanted his next of kin informed. Nikki raised some important observations that I agree I would also undertake, to gather as much information as the patients state as possible.
2, I agree with Dan that after assessing I would concentrate on the catheter, its drainage to ensure patient hydration. And to check the catheter is patent however like Alex and Jo said this could be a part of the assessment process. I would document this in the patient’s notes and also on the fluid balance chart.
3, Give him information about what will happen in his 24hour stay in hospital, again I agree with Zara, it seems the logical step to make after the first two assessments, that way the patient can be kept informed, which would aid in the shared decision making processes, maintain automny and justice.
4, Call his wife to inform her of Bibi’s admission. again I agree with Alex, Jo, Dan, Zara and Nikki, the last process would be to inform the family members/next of kin. Like how Dan stated I would gain consent from the patient prior to doing this. I think that leaving this as the last step, you as a nurse have a clear picture of the plan of actions for the patients care. So when the wife does eventually visit both the patient and the family can be informed about the next processess.
