Question 1 – I would choose option 1 as Sarah is clearly worried and a video call could reassure Sarah that Theo is in safe hands. It could also help to develop their mother /son bond as Theo will be able to hear Sarah’s voice more often. If Sarah is feeling stressed and upset it could hinder her recovery: prolonging her stay in hospital.
Question 2 – I would choose option 2, Sarah may want someone to talk to or even someone to listen to her. The fact the curtains are closed indicates anyone entering the bed space should be respectful and ‘knock’ to ask if it’s ok to come in. This demonstrates respect and gives the patient the option to talk or be alone.
Question 3 – I would choose option 2, show empathy to Sarah and explain to her that it is not in her best interests if she leaves hospital against medical advice. I would try to understand Sarah’s upset and liaise with the ward manager to do all we can to help her feel closer to Theo. Conversely, if Sarah has capacity and is able to give consent and she wanted to self discharge we could not hold her against her will but could only offer factual advice and recommendation.
