Q1 – I would choose option one because it embraces the patient centred approach. Considering that taking baby Theo to another hospital might have made Sarah to be distressed, I would make the phone call using good communication skills as this might improve the outcome for Sarah.
Q2 – I would choose option 2 because it is the option that treats Sarah as an individual and it upholds her dignity which supports the NMC code of Prioritising people. It also recognises that consent is a continuous process because despite speaking with Sarah when we made the call, I still had to ask again if I can come to her bed space.
Option 2 also recognises that there’s a need to always act in the patient best interest because it made clear how Sarah should be listened to (clear communication) and the need for a plan of action that will manage her concerns.
Q3 – I would choose 2 because the 6Cs are embedded in the response. The other options might be too extreme considering that the Mental Capacity Act allows an individual to make unwise decisions except they don’t have the capacity.
