Q1: Charles is happy to use the AF App you have recommended but is struggling to access it and has asked you to help him during his appointment.

I would offer to show Charles how the app works during the appointment and provide the information in an alternative format if appropriate. If during the appointment Charles manages to gain access to the app I would then advise that he goes home and uses it and offer to arrange an interim follow up appointment / telephone call to further support and encourage Charles to use the app.

Q2: Charles is keen to return to riding his bike but is unsure when or if he can do this now.

As a junior nurse, I would advise Charles talks to the medical team and the senior nurses before undertaking this so that it is progressed and done at the right time. I would also ask whether Charles has had any input from the therapy services like physio or OT and if appropriate refer him.

Q3. Charles is concerned about his risk of stroke in the future. He asks you about the signs of a stroke.

I would direct Charles to the following advice, Face – does your face look different on one side? Arms – can you raise your arms? Speech – is your speech slurred or different? Time to act – call 999, get help. I would also direct Charles to recognised sources of information like NHS.uk to help support him gain a wider knowledge of his risks and the condition including signs and symptoms.
