Build some ideas with your peers about what support may be helpful for Daisy and her family which you can re-visit and add to as you work your way through the remainder of the tasks.

Nurses can offer information on support groups available in the area or different organisations who can guide and help Daisy and her family. For instance Macmillan Cancer Support is a charitable organization that provides practical, medical and financial support to cancer patients in the UK. Nurses can refer Daisy to dieticians who can advise on various ways to provide nutrients she needs if she is unable to eat well. Nurses can also provide information on play specialist who uses play to help children cope with the experiences of the illness. Likewise, physiotherapists and occupational therapists can help with mobility and equipment to help mobility for daily activities for daisy. Furthermore, social workers can also help with any practical, emotional and financial problems for the family.

Looking after a paediatric patient, especially one who becomes palliative or end of life, means the nurse will be having to also consider the parents wishes and feelings too. Holistic care, empowerment and discussions at every step are key to making sure the family as a whole are listened to and have their concerns raised. Having family rooms or spare beds in thee childs room allows parents to stay overnight and comfort the child. Making sure they are frequently asked if they would like a drink, spare blanket etc can ease their mind and make them feel cared whilst their minds are focused on the child.

Supporting the psychosocial needs of Daisy and her family is really important as elaborated in Premdevi’s comment above. Treatment will take a toll on both family and Daisy so it is important for health workers to support them as much as they can. The family will need help with finances as one of them may have to stay home and look after Daisy. Also, daisy can attend day groups so she will be able to play with other kids to meet her social need. Although diagnoses and treatment can’t be changed speaking to Daisy and her family to manage her symptoms from treatment can also help her meet her physical needs.

When a child has cancer, every member of the family needs support. Parents often feel shocked and overwhelmed following their child’s cancer diagnosis.
because treatment can last for months or even years which means that long stay in the hospital and being away from siblings. for that reason, is important to receive
support from health professionals such as psychologists, Emotional support is provided by listening to them and allowing them to express their wishes and their needs and helping them with practical worries maybe it would be difficult for them to take care of other children while they are in the hospital with Daisy during her treatment.
