KeymasterWhen you watched the clip of Chris having an asthma attack, what did you think about the response of the Doctor when Chris said he felt like he was going to die. What would you say?
Discuss the pros and cons of the below responses with your cohort colleagues.
- You are not going to die. (this is what the Doctor in the clip said).
- What makes you think that Chris?
- If you just slow your breathing down you will be fine.
- Everything will be ok, stop talking, to save your breath.

Participant1) You are not going to die. (this is what the Doctor in the clip said).
Pros: The medical reassurance might help Chris remain calm. avoiding panic- which would lead to more rapid breathing and exacerbate the problem.
Cons: The doctor cannot guarantee this, the situation should be taken seriously.(2) What makes you think that Chris?
Pros: This may make Chris appreciate that he is in a safe environment and being looked after
Cons: Making Chris explain his thoughts about why he might be dying will use up breath, making him more breathless. Chris should focus instead on his breathing. It might also be perceived that the doctor is not taking Chris’ condition seriously.(3) If you just slow your breathing down you will be fine.
Pros: Might reassure Chris.
Cons: Is not necessarily the case- Chris needs medicated intervention and his recovery is not solely going to be based on breathing exercises.4) Everything will be ok, stop talking, to save your breath.
Pros: Focuses Chris on his breathing
Cons: Chris might not then raise any updates on his condition, such as if he felt better/worse or had a change of symptoms.-

Participant1. You are not going to die Chris
Pros – Keeps Chris calm and reassured
Cons – The doctor cannot guarantee this because there is the potential for the medications given not working.
2. What makes you think that?
Pros – Takes the focus off Chris struggling to breath slightly and moves his attention to something else.
Cons – Chris is struggling to breath so expecting an answer to questions isn’t really fair on Chris under the circumstances
3. If you just slow your breathing down you will be fine.
Pros – Reassures Chris and will help ease his anxiety.
Cons – Chris cannot do this by himself and could make the situation worse because he might feel he is alone and not being taken seriously.
4. Everything will be ok, stop talking, save your breath.
Pros – Will reassure Chris and he will be able to focus on his breathing. The reassurance would help to ease his anxiety.
Cons – May prevent Chris for speaking out if he feels worse.October 25, 2022 at 1:46 pm #9000Tracey Wilding
Participant1) Pros- The doctor is reassuring Chris he is not going to die.
Cons- This is not guaranteed, as the doctor is unsure if the medication will work.
2) Pros- Chris trying to explain how he feels will give the doctor more insight on his condition.
Cons- Chris is struggling to breath so talking will be a challenge for him.
3) Pros- Asking Chris to slow his breathing down will hopefully relax him so his breathing won’t be so rapid.
Cons- Chris is panicking and is not able to slow his breathing down.
4) Pros- Chris will concentrate on his breathing, instead of trying to talk to the doctor.
Cons – He might not let the doctor know if his condition is worsening.October 25, 2022 at 6:02 pm #9004Christos Zogas
Participant(1) You are not going to die. (this is what the Doctor in the clip said).
pros – this can be taken as reassurance that he is in safe hands and that he is being looked after
cons – this is not a true statement as the Dr can not guarantee this from happening.
2) What makes you think that Chris?
pros – gives the Dr an insight on how Chris is feeling
cons – asking Chris questions when he is struggling to breathe is only going to make him more breathless
(3) If you just slow your breathing down you will be fine.
pros- this is a way of trying to get Chris to relax which may result in him breathing slower
cons- this may not help with Chris as he is clearly struggling with his breathing and may feel that he can not slow it down
4) Everything will be ok, stop talking, to save your breath.
pros – again the reassurance may help with Chris breathing knowing that the Dr has said everything will be ok
cons – Chris may not speak out if he starts to feel any worse.October 25, 2022 at 9:25 pm #9012Sindhu Lalu
Participant(1) You are not going to die.
pros-Chris received assurances from the doctor that he is in good hands and will be well taken care of.
cons-Even if the doctor could reassure the patient, it is best to wait to see how the medication works because there is no guarantee of a positive outcome.
(2) What makes you think Chris that?
pros- Chris shows a willingness to concentrate on the queries that raise the doctor’s appreciation.
cons-Asking him more questions when he is having breathing difficulties is not a good strategy because it will make the situation worse.
(3) If you just slow your breathing down you will be fine.
pros-Hearing this will reassure and calm him.
cons-Instead of attempting to settle down on his own, Chris could think that he requires more assistance from the clinical side.
(4) Everything will be ok, stop talking, to save your breath.
pros-Trying to reassure him may help him relax and decrease his anxiety.
cons-He might not raise any concerns later.October 26, 2022 at 8:20 pm #9023Nataliya Hay
Participant1. You are not going to die. Pros- will reassure Chris, and maybe he will feel more at ease. Cons- There is never a guarantee for the worst outcome
2. What makes you think that, Chris? Pros- Will allow Chris to express his concerns. The cons-I think it will be challenging for Chris to answer any questions in this condition.
3. If you just slow your breathing down, you will be fine. Pros: will give some to Chris. Cons: Chris needs medication to open his airways; he is just not able slow his breathing down.
Everything will be ok; stop talking to save your breath. Pros- Might relieve Chris’s anxiety and reassure him. Cons: Chris might not tell the medical staff whether he is feeling better or worse.October 26, 2022 at 10:54 pm #9024Kya Cumberbatch
Participant1. Pro’s- Gives Chris reassurance that the treatment provided will help him.
Cons- A positive outcome is not always guaranteed. Also, it is not a compassionate way to comfort Chris when he is already feeling distressed. That response could come across abrupt especially when in a distressed state.2- Pro’s- Chris will feel empowered by this and that his concerns are being heard and addressed. He will feel very involved in his current situation
Cons- Encouraging an answer from Chris who is already struggling to breath is problematic and could worsen his symptoms.3- Pro’s- Receiving medical advice could make Chris feel as ease and make him feel he is in safe hands. If he follows the nurse’s advice he may feel as though he will recover which may help him to relax.
Cons- This is not guaranteed. Chris could slow his breathing down and his symptoms worsen, or he feels worse for it. There is no guarantee. Every patient is different and responds differently.4- Pro’s- This may ease Chris’ anxiety and thoughts about him dying may lessen. He will be more focused on his breathing.
Cons- Further concerns may not get raised by Chris, this could be problematic if communication breaks down between the staff and Chris. Chris is at further risk.October 27, 2022 at 1:52 pm #9028Sarah Kay
Participant1) Pros – Gave Chris reassurance, which may help him try to remain calm
Cons – The doctor wasn’t honest, this outcome could have gone either way.
2) Pros – Informing the doctor how he feels will indicate the severity
Cons – Chris is using vital energy and oxygen to talk
3) Pros – Sometimes simple advice may give some reassurance, and may distract the person whilst they concentrate on this task
Cons – If this doesn’t help then Chris may start to panic and exacerbate the attack even more
4) Pros – The fact about saving your breath will be beneficial
Cons – This may frighten Chris about trying to speak again, and if he feels worse he may not want to communicate thisOctober 27, 2022 at 9:52 pm #9036Jemma O’Donnell
ParticipantI agree with what others have said. I feel the main thing to do in the siutationi s try to keep chris re assured and offer support in an empathetic manner. I didnt consider by asking him to stop talking and save his breath, that could prevent him from alerting staff to any deteriorations in his symptoms

ParticipantI agree with my colleagues. The fact that it will give Chris reassurance but no guarantee of the outcome. But I believe that Treating him politely and considerately, listening to and respecting his feelings will give him empowerment and will help him reduce stress and anxiety considerably.
